He married Marjorie Elizabeth Sippel 205a on 04 Oct 1924 in Lackawanna, Pennsylvania, USA (St. Mark's Lutheran Church. The marriage certificate says 5 Oct 1924.). She was born on 01 Mar 1902 in Scranton, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania, USA. She died on 18 Oct 1971 in Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia.

The family story is that John Clarke added the middle initial "H.," sometimes making it "Henry."

His sister-in-law Aunt Alice Sippel is sure that he was born in Mount Upton, New York. Aunt Alice says that Grandpa did not like high school, especially the Latin teacher. His father sent him to business school in Albany (see his report cards from Oct 1915 to March 1916), but John enlisted for the Mexican border patrol and served under General Pershing. He was not stationed there very long and did not cross into Mexico.

In his Enlistment Record John’s Horsemanship was rated as very good.

On discharge on 3 April 1919, his character was described as excellent and his physical condition as very good. He was entitled to a $60.00 bonus and travel pay to Albany N.Y.

Aunt Alice wrote (3/25/87) that she remembers when John "came home from the first World War. He was very handsome and bought himself a sporty car right away. All the girls were interested in him."

In a 16 Sept 1920 lease, John, living at 838 Harrison Ave. in Scranton, rented a Hupmobile Roadster from a dealer in Philadelphia for forty weeks at an upfront cost of $545.75, to be kept in a garage in Scranton; biweekly rent during the lease was $25. At the end of the lease, John could purchase the vehicle for $1050.75, applying the rental payments to the purchase.

Awarded a disability allowance 16 September 1931 by the U.S. Veterans Bureau in the amount of $12 per month. His ankles suffered from a horse-riding accident. He may also have been exposed to mustard gas.

RDC says that Jack ran a YMCA boarding house in Scranton for the workers on the Lackawanna Railroad (DL&W). He was laid off in 1931. He was out of work for about two and a half years. Aunt Alice says that John had a hard time in the Depression because he had no specific training. He and Marjorie bought the house in Factoryville to run as a boarding house for tourists, but it did not work out.

John Clarke was a Sub-District Civil Director in the Ground Observer System of the First Fighter

Command, Army Air Force, according to a letter dated 26 August 1942. This system watched for enemy airplanes over U.S. territory in WWII.

Grandpa was a Mason, served as treasurer of his American Legion Post for 18 years, was in charge of the local observation post in WW2, and ran the State Liquor Store in Tunkhannock from its opening in 1934 to his death in 1962.

In October 1951, John and Marjorie visited Bob, BJ, and sons in Mobile, Alabama, where they saw the dead body of a "tremendous killer whale" washed up on the beach. They also visited family in Pensacola and Hattiesburg.

John was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Find-A-Grave 49167493

Notes for Albert Clarke C06a:

Albert converted at the age of 15 and joined the Wesleyan Methodist Church. He taught Sunday School at 16 and was a local preacher for eight years in Methodist churches in Northampton. The church required its ministers to be unmarried. He decided to emigrate to America to be a minister.

Albert was about to officiate at the funeral of a congregant in her home, when he suddenly became ill and died at the house.
